The Mighty Have Fallen    —    from Samuel Book II, Chapter 1, verses 17-27  —    © 2015 by Myron Schreck

Oh how the mighty have fallen!    Shaul my King …  and his son Yonatan. Vanquished in battle, they died.  Sadly cut down … in the prime of their lives. Tell it not in Gath… Or in the streets of Ashkelon…  Don’t let the daughters …  of the Philistines …  rejoice. Children of Yisroel cry! Our King has died.

See how the mighty have fallen. Our weapons of war … are now lost forever.  Shaul … and Prince Yonatan Swifter than eagles … stronger than lions. Shaul…  He protected us … with his shield and with his sword.  He clothed us all.   … . In scarlet … and in gold. Daughters of Yisroel, weep!     Our King is gone.

Banish the rain and the dew from Mount Gilboa.  Shrivel the fields and the fruit ,,, from those hills….  Way up high…  Where our mighty warriors died.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.   Oh how the mighty have fallen. Oh how the mighty have fallen.   Oh how the mighty have fallen. The beauty of Yisroel liesIn the fields …on the hills …  way up high. So children of Yisroel cry … for they are no more.

Children of Judah, prepare!     You must learn to use the bow.     We will fight again. Yonatan had mastered the bow. It never snapped back…  or foiled his aim.   Oh, Yonatan, my Yonatan … my sweet and wonderful brother … You loved me more…  than any woman I’ve known. Oh Yonatan … is gone. Oh Yonatan … is gone.

Banish the rain and the dew from Mount Gilboa.   Shrivel the fields and the fruit … from those hills …  Way up high… Where our mighty warriors died.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.       Yisroel’s Pride.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.       Lost in their prime.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.       Together they died.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.       So Yisroel, cry
