I first recorded a draft in 2011 – in instrumental form. Over the next three years, I worked up lyrics I liked — and I re-arranged a couple of bridges. Unfortunately, I only recorded one vocal of an early version of lyrics. So the first version below is the original instrumental, without a vocal. The second version is my first attempt at adding a vocal to the instrumental – and I am only publishing here an excerpt of this vocal version. I have not yet recorded a version with my new changes to bridges and the finale.

Running out of luck ©  2014 by Myron Schreck

I drew an eight to an inside straight
But I lost to a flush,
I guess those are the breaks
With luck like that,
Running out of Luck ain't so bad

I bet on a horse that never lost
when the track was wet
But right out of the gate,
she tripped and broke her leg
With luck like that,
Running out of Luck ain't so bad

BRIDGE ONE
A Gambler's gonna lose a few times
More than one or two times,
that's just how it goes
But I've been running cold
for so long that I know
When the odds are that bad ...
The gods must be laughing

Some people tell me
that my luck will change someday,
Some people say:
"I'm a fool to keep gambling my life away."
Yeah, luck like mine --
I'm the guy you want to bet against.
______________

I lost my suit ...
my coat ... and my shoes
I got almost nothing left
but a barrel full of blues
With luck like that,
Running out of Luck ain't so bad

BRIDGE TWO
Some day I'll realize
that the hole that I'm in
Keeps getting deeper ...
The more I dig
And though it really hurts
each time I lose my shirt
Quitting's so hard for me.
It's not in the cards for me.

I tried to stop ––
I left my money at home.
But my house caught on fire ...
I lost everything I own

Luck like that ––
is the only kind of luck I have.
But that ain't so bad.
Because ––
Running out of luck means  ––
Soon I'll have nothing left to bet.
